Why should you use reusable straws?

why should you use reusable straws

Any drink becomes fun when a straw is used. We use drinking straws mainly for hygienic reasons and because it makes every drink inviting and looking cool that so many people use it in restaurants. Unfortunately, single-use plastic straws are among the world's most common plastic pollutants. Good thing is there’s a lot of reusable drinking straws available on the market that are eco-friendly.

Plastic Straws Problem

From its production to disposal, plastic have an adverse effect on the environment. It takes millions of gallons of oil to make plastic. Plastic production also contributes to unprecedented rise in carbon emissions. Transporting plastics through ships and trucks require energy. Once they serve their purpose, most plastic products are then discarded and without proper waste management, they are left in landfills and unfortunately some end up in our oceans. Plastics usually take thousands of years to decompose and the majority of plastic straws are not recycled.

An estimated 2.3 million plastic straws are thrown away daily in the UK alone. While there’s no exact number, the amount of plastic waste in our landfills and oceans are in the billions in some estimates. Data like this is why more and more establishments, environmental groups and even national governments are taking action and calling for bans on plastic straws.

There are plenty of solutions that are being thrown around to reduce our plastic waste. Some industry experts suggest that places that serve food and beverage should not automatically include plastic straws to every order and only provide plastic straw when asked by the customer. Others have called for a total ban on plastic straws everywhere. Regardless, both sides agree that using reusable drinking straws can only do good on the environment.

Reusable Drinking Straws

There are plenty of reusable drinking straws available. There’s stainless steel, glass, silicone and bamboo. Glass straws are stylish and elegant. While they are made from borosilicate glass, they can still break. Stainless steel straws are the most durable, resistant and rust-proof. However, you need to be extra careful when using them and they are not recommended for use on hot beverages.

Bamboo straws are probably the most eco-friendly among the reusable drinking straws. They are made from 100% natural material and like any other natural products, they are biodegradable. You may have to clean bamboo straws more often than you would with other reusable drinking straws. Furthermore, bamboo straws, while durable and even with proper care, will eventually render themselves unusable due to wear and tear. Fortunately, you can throw them away in your compost pile and they will break down naturally.

Silicone straws are the most flexible among the reusable drinking straws. They are durable, and bendable which allows you to squeeze them inside your bag or pocket. Most silicone straws come with a squeegee for easy cleaning and some are even dishwasher-safe.

Switching from plastic straws to reusable ones goes a long way in helping reduce our environmental wastes. With reusable drinking straws, we get to enjoy our drink while saving the planet through sustainability.
