The absolute winner in plastic-free, soaps and skin care category is soap-on-a-rope, aka soap rope. Any of us who’ve had a go at DIY natural soap making will be familiar with the generic melt and pour soap base, often not vegan, gets mixed with whatever selection of (often synthetic) oils are available and poured into a pretty mold and voila, you’ve got yourself some natural soap. Companies such as Airmid and the Agnes & Cat Soap Company have taken soap several levels higher, however, and created face and body bars which include a vegan coconut butter base and added ingredients to enrich and soften skin. These are then attached to a length of (usually hempen) rope by which they can be hung when not in use - it also means they’re less likely to get dropped in the shower! – all of which contributes to the lifespan of your bar, the reduction of soap gunk and most importantly, the elimination of plastic waste!
