How to Wash Reusable Sanitary Pads
Reusable feminine pads have been around for many years and only gained popularity recently due to serious environmental concerns caused by plastic waste. Using them instead of disposables significantly reduces waste that end up in landfills and oceans.
With recent innovations and advancement in technology, reusable sanitary pads have been made more comfortable and affordable. They are durable and designed to last for at least 10 years.
Whether you are already using reusable sanitary pads or still deciding to make the switch, itís important to know how to properly wash and care for them so that they can last for a long time.
There are so many ways in which you can wash your reusable pads which include using your washing machine and soaking them in a bucket full of water. Here are some tips on how to wash and clean your reusable pads:
Before washing your reusable pads, you would need to pretreat your them in order to remove the stains. Light stains dissolve easily in water but tougher stains require stain removers. You can use natural stain removers like baking soda and lemon juice or store bought ones. You may soak your reusable pads for 30 minutes or overnight.
Pre-treating or pre-soaking your washable pads is not required but highly recommended because it makes washing them easy.
Using detergents to wash your reusable pads depends on the brand. While the use of detergents makes washing convenient and easy, some brands do not recommend using them because they might harden the absorbent core or result in lime build-up.
Some people use fabric softeners to keep their pads as soft as possible but again it is not recommended by some manufacturers. Fabric softeners are artificial fragrances that may harm whatís down there.
Ideally, a cooler wash is recommended. Warm water may enable materials such as cotton to shrink and you donít want that to happen. There are also mild soaps that can be used so go for one or use liquid soaps.
Another tip is putting them inside a mesh laundry bag in a full load. This method minimises wear and tear and helps your washable pads to last longer. Also, in a full load, energy and water is conserved.
Sun drying is one of the most effective ways to kill bacteria from your reusable pads and sunlight is great in stain removal. After washing your pads, dry them out under the sun. It is also recommended to read the wash and care instructions because there are some brands that require tumble drier. But nothing beats the warmth of the sun.
When you are out and about, emergencies can happen. So it is highly recommended to store reusable sanitary pads in wet bags to bring along with you. Wet bags are designed specifically to be waterproof and to contain smell and odor so it can also be used to store used and soiled reusable pads.
Wet bags also allow you to store cloth pads when you are not yet ready to wash them. These bags come in a wide range of sizes, styles and designs so thereís a wet bag for everyone. You can also buy cloth pads that fold into tiny sizes that donít take much space inside wet bags.
Remember to soak or rinse your sanitary towels with cold water prior to putting them inside your wet bags to help remove and loosen the stains.
